Various groups came together to celebrate National Tree Day by planting 6 trees on the entrance driveway at Dr. Kelly‘s Field at Arden. Tullamore Sports Complex’s chairman Tommy McKeigue (also a former chairman of the Tidy Towns), Joe Stewart; treasurer of Offaly Climate and Biodiversity Action Group, Matthew McCourtney; Tullamore Credit Union; Tullamore Tidy Towns Chair Shane Murray and members Loughnan Hooper, Vsevolod Strilchuk, Mark Sheehy and Rajesh Sidhpura, visiting from India. The group planted native Irish beech trees, (two green, two copper) and two fruit trees, to go alongside the five already planted previously as part of the National Fruit Tree Pollination Plan. Tullamore Tidy Towns recognises the importance of tree plaqnting with Shane Murray stating, 'National Tree Day is important as it educates children and communities about the vital role trees play in environmental health, climate action, and biodiversity. This is why we chose this sporting facility, used by a mixture of children and adults, as they will walk past these trees on the way to the pitches to enjoy the various community sport activities that take place here.'
If your community group or school would like to get involved in planting native trees or fruit trees please make contact with Tullamore Tidy Towns.
