Tullamore Rank 5th in National IBAL League

    Mon 5th Jan 2026

An Taisce Report – IBAL Anti-Litter League, Survey 2, 2025 Tullamore: 5th out of 40 towns / cities surveyed.

    Cleaner than European Norms.

Another excellent result for Tullamore with seven out of the ten sites getting the top litter grade. These included Axis Business Park (exceptionally freshly presented and well maintained); Market Square was attractively presented and well maintained with a virtual absence of litter throughout; the Main Street had some lovely features (colourful tiered planter boxes, attractive paving and trees looking very autumnal); Lloyd Town Park is certainly a gem – all aspects of were in very good order and clearly it’s a very well respected park environment.

Axis Business Park: Grade A. Signage and planting at the entrance were in good order, creating a positive first impression of this business park. This was sustained throughout the business park with road surface / pavements / tree planting / flower beds etc in very good order, with both the public areas and individual premises very well maintained. It is quite unusual to see a business park in such an excellent state.

Clara Approach Road: Grade A. This route creates a positive first impression of Tullamore with a virtual absence of litter throughout. The overall impression was of a freshly presented and well maintained environment. R443

Collins Lane Approach Road: Grade B+. (from Ardan Roundabout to junction R421) The litter items along this side of this road were primarily food related e.g. sweet papers, mineral cans, fast food wrappers and coffee cups, along with some cigarette butts. The majority of the litter was within the grass / verges to the side of the road.

Market Square: Grade A. This town square environment was characterised by a lovely pedestriansed area in the middle, with benches and an array of trees and colourful planter boxes – all of which were in very good order. There was a virtual absence of litter throughout.

Bring Centre, Daingean Road: Grade B+. This small facility is freshly presented with recycle units and signage associated with the use of same in very good condition. Overall, it was very good but was let down by broken glass on the ground, in front of the green glass units – potentially hazardous for future users.

Church Street: Grade B. This mixed used, (both commercial and residential) was clear of litter along some stretches (as you walk away from the town centre and particularly walking towards Lidl) somewhat littered in others. The most obvious litter items were cigarette butts, with lower levels of some food related items and vape device. The streetscape was very much enhanced by John Lee’s pub. The boarding in front of the derelict house had significant graffiti presence.

Deposit Return Scheme, Lidl: Grade A. A welcome feature at this Deposit Return Scheme facility is the opportunity to ‘empty any excess liquids from containers’ before using the machine – it seems to be well used and managed as there was no liquid on the ground, and the area was very much deserving of the top litter ground.

Main Street: Grade A. On the day of the IBAL visit, the trees along this main shopping street looked wonderfully autumnal. The area was enhanced by colourful tiered planter boxes and attractive paving along some stretches. The area in front of Tom’s Artisanal Bakery and Café looked particularly well. Seating, signage and other elements of the streetscape were freshly presented. The overall impression with regards to litter was a very good one.

Lloyd Town Park: Grade A. A superb park environment. ‘No Smoking’ signage is something that is increasingly seen in park / outdoor spaces throughout the country. There was excellent signage at the entrance. All aspects of this park environment were in excellent order and there was a complete absence of litter throughout – fitting for a Green Flag Park site.

Charleville Approach Road: Grade A. Road surface, markings and signage were in good order along this route. It was freshly presented and well maintained with just one crisp packet visible throughout the stretch surveyed.
